Columbia is a census-designated place in Howard County, Maryland, United States. It is a planned community consisting of 10 independent villages that has come a long way since its inception as part of Maryland's territory. The District of Columbia Organic Act of 1871 created a new single district corporation that governed the entire federal territory, called the District of Columbia, thus dissolving the district's three main political subdivisions (the Port of Georgetown, the City of Washington, and the County of Washington) and their governments.The Mall in Columbia, located in the center of the city, is a large regional mall with three main department stores (Nordstrom, Macy's, and JCPenney), a multiplex movie theater, and more than 200 stores and restaurants.
